Narrative
When maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry finds her livelihood under attack from greedy competitors who were once her friends, she hatches a plan to get revenge and shake up the entire industry. Loosely based on the 2011-2012 theft of $18 million worth of maple syrup. In rural Quebec, Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) struggles to keep her maple farm afloat while her husband lies in a coma.
Tyrannical syndicate boss Leonard Sr
is looking to steal her fortune on the cheap. Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) is a frustrated lone ranger at the syndicate’s warehouse. Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) is a lowly poacher from a Boston mob family.
Tribute has been paid
Fargo is strong on this. Like that franchise, this could have been a movie or a TV show. It also has snow, quirky criminals and small-town people, and even a true/false story.
Another problem is the language barrier
The cast is led by the great Margo Martindale and the slightly mischievous Chris Diamantopoulos. Two things initially bother me and hold it back a bit. The story is inherently silly, and I’m not sure if the Fargo treatment is worth it.
That takes some getting used to
