Abrams’ “Lost” had an almost entirely different cast
Survivors of a plane crash are forced to work together to survive on a seemingly deserted tropical island… J.J. See which A-listers missed out on one of the most popular TV shows of all time. Sawyer’s character was originally supposed to be an older, more elegant, suit-wearing urban con artist from Buffalo, NY. But when Josh Holloway forgot a line during his audition and later kicked a chair and cursed loudly in frustration, the writers liked how it felt for Sawyer’s character and decided to write Sawyer as a more Southern, darker drifter. Jin and Sun are married and share the last name Kwon, which becomes a major plot point in the final season. However, when Koreans get married, the wife never takes her husband’s last name.
Then comes Lost
In fact, in Korea, it’s not even allowed to marry with the same last name, except in rare circumstances. [repeated line] Desmond Hume: See you in the next life, bro. Abrams carried a laptop in black and white as a tribute to The Twilight Zone. Adapted from Lost: The Journey (2005). So many quality shows have ended or been canceled recently (Friends, Frasier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) and so many more on the quality side (The West Wing, Smallville). and tacky "reality" I’ve almost written off television as an entertainment medium. I seriously considered giving up my TV and cable subscription in favor of a computer screen and broadband.
Now I’m hooked
I missed the first few episodes, but I managed to catch up thanks to BitTorrent. There are a few things you like about this show, but here’s a short list: 1) Amazing, intelligent, layered writing. There are a lot of mysteries, and every answer you get raises more questions 2) Rich, complex characters. Just when you think you have a character figured out, you learn something new about them, which is often surprising or even shocking. I love watching the different relationships form and develop. 3) Strong performances. It’s a great cast, mostly seasoned actors with a few newcomers, and they’re all star-making.

There have even been some episodes that featured recognizable, talented actors (e.g. 4) Mysterious and fascinating setting. Of the four basic story elements you learn in school, plot, character, theme, and setting, it often has a poor, neglected cousin. Not here. The island is dangerous, beautiful, scary, and undeniably interesting. It’s like a character in itself. Part of the fun of this show will be uncovering the secrets of the island.
This is not just a desert island soap opera
5) Thematic depth. There are many metaphors and themes to mine, such as moral challenges; the nature of communities and civilization; our relationship to nature/environment; and spirituality, even mysticism. I am grateful to see this show be a hit. Too often lately I have committed to making a quality show prematurely (Wonderfalls is the latest and most regrettable example) only to have it canceled prematurely by a nervous network. I hope "Lost" will be a long and successful one – if its creators, cast and crew maintain the level of quality they have demonstrated thus far, I am sure it will.
