Narrative

When Yang said she couldn’t film the movie during the Saturday Night Live season, Grande personally called Lorne Michaels to beg. Eventually, they worked out a schedule that required Yang to fly to and from the ground once a week. In the classroom scene where Elphaba makes flowers rise into the air and the pollen sends the students to sleep, you can clearly see the thread hanging one of the flowers as it moves. It will be interesting to see if this is fixed for the film’s streaming and DVD release.

Wizard: The best way to bring people together is to give them a real good enemy. The film’s title uses the font style of The Wizard of Oz (1939) opening credits. Appeared in AniMat’s crazy cartoon Cast: Chip n' Dale: A New Legacy (2022). No One Mourns the Wicked Written by Stephen Schwartz Starring Ariana Grande, Andy Nyman, Courtney Mae-Briggs, Jeff Goldblum, Sharon D. There are a few things about this film that really didn’t work for me, but there’s also a lot to enjoy. Overall, it’s a perfectly watchable and entertaining enough experience, but it could and should have been so much better. First of all, on the positives, Ariana Grande is absolutely stunning as Glinda. I was skeptical about her relationship as the lead actress, but she really knocks it out of the park.
Voice-wise, she’s spot on
Her demeanor and dialogue are perfect. She really outshines all the other actors and is just Glinda in every way. Aesthetically, in terms of costuming and staging, I think this film hits the mark again. The commitment to practical sets and reducing green screen technology is noticeable and it creates a more interesting look to the film. Finally, the production value of the musical numbers is really solid. Aside from Defying Gravity running a little too long, I think the songs are all brilliantly performed and well choreographed. Now for my complaints… The whole thing is way too long.
There’s simply no need
Two hours and forty minutes? Not only that, but somehow despite all this extra breathing room, the film doesn’t pack as much emotion into its story as the theatrical production. I felt like the plot points around the animals and also Elphaba wanting to meet the wizard just didn’t carry as much weight as they should. There was way too much time between the emotional beats of the story due to the added running time, which diminished their impact. I can’t say she has a great voice (and she nails Defying Gravity), but I just wasn’t convinced by Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba. Maybe it’s the director’s fault, but she was just a little too reserved and shy, and it was incredibly difficult to connect with her. I know that’s part of Elphaba’s character, but the whole performance was just too muted. It doesn’t help that she’s starring opposite the brilliant Glinda.
they just felt a little dull
Another annoyance is the film’s color palette, which is disappointingly dull. Given the technical marvel of The Wizard of Oz, I was hoping this film would show a little more on screen. Glinda’s pink dresses, Elphaba’s green skin, even the Emerald City itself… Still, none of these quirks are definitive. If you liked the stage show in Wicked, you’ll love this film. If you like musicals, you’ll enjoy this film. Even if you’re just a casual moviegoer, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here.
